The Simplest Referral Strategy We Run Every Year (and why it works)

Every year we run one of the simplest and warmest traditions in our business.
We hand deliver giant Costco pumpkin pies to our past clients, closest friends, and local family right before Thanksgiving.
It’s one of the few referral strategies that works instantly while being genuine and personal.
Most people are home the day before Thanksgiving.
Some are home two days before. When you show up with a pie for their holiday table, it hits different. Their home is full. Their family is around. The timing makes the gesture unforgettable.
How To Pull It Off
Here is the step by step plan our team follows:
Text your people today. If you have a large list, ask who wants a pie so you can plan the route. If your past client list is small and personal, don’t ask. Tell them you’re stopping by with their Thanksgiving pie. If they will be out of town, they will tell you.
Include your closest local family and friends. They talk about you just as much as clients do when hosting holiday gatherings.
Start deliveries the day before Thanksgiving. Two days before at most. People are excited to see you and love catching up.
Text your next stop as you go. It creates anticipation and gives people time to be home if they want to say hi. If they aren’t home, it’s still a great touch point and the pie waiting on their porch still makes an impression.
Add a business card or small sticker to the pie lid. It’s subtle and it gets seen by every person who opens that box.
Most clients don’t just say thanks. They walk us through their home. They show remodels, new rooms, new kids updates, life changes. They love chatting with Mike while I chauffeur him around Hampton Roads with pie boxes stacked in the back. These conversations are better than any marketing plan.
In a three day window you create three natural touch points.
The text today announcing the pies.
The doorstep delivery.
The follow up text while on your delivery route.
Multiply that by a holiday gathering where ten to twenty people see your pie with your sticker on it, and you have a warm referral engine running without pushing for business.
